Course Content

Theory: 

• Wave shaping and pulse generating circuits; transistor switch, pulse generators, wave shaping circuits, applications.


•  


•   Power Semi-conductor Devices; power semi – conductor devices (UJTS, SCRS, Triacs, Diacs), construction and operation, characteristics, applications (motor control, heating elements, design of control circuits.


• OptoElectronics (photo emissive and photosensitive devices); construction and operation, characteristics, applications. 


•  


• Optical Fibres and lasers: Optical fibres; optical fibres systems, refraction and reflection, the propagation of light in an optical fibre, optical fibre characteristics, types of optical fibre, optical sources, optical detectors, opto isolators, infra – red optical links.


•  


• Lasers; introduction to lasers, characteristics of lasers: (directionality, high power, tight focusing, spectral purity), basic requirements of laser (the active medium, the pumping source, the optical resonator), types of lasers (solid state, liquid dye and gas laser)


•  

1. Wave shaping and pulse generating circuits; circuit connections of: 555 Timer IC, discrete components, to assemble monostable, astable, bistable. use of schmitt trigger for wave shaping, discrete components and integrated circuits.

3. Power Semi – conductor Devices; characteristics, power control circuits, controlled rectification (half wave, full wave), A.C. control (e.g. light dimming), control pulse generating circuits, dc motorspeed control

Opto – electronic devices; plotting characteristics of opto – electronic devices (photo emissive devices and photo sensitive devices), connecting circuit to demonstrate their application, measurement of e.g. oxygen concentration in blood (pulse oximeter), infusion counters, tablet counters, control, transmission of information.
